Emery: We Do What We Want Review

Synopsis:
Emery is an American four-piece post-hardcore band from Rock Hill, South Carolina currently signed to both Tooth & Nail Records and Solid State Records and based in Seattle, Washington. Emery was founded in Rock Hill, South Carolina with the original lineup consisting of Toby Morrell, Devin Shelton, Matt Carter, Josh Head, Joel Green and Seth Studley. Emery moved to Seattle in order to reach a more music centered scene. While the band avoids the stigma of being labeled a "Christian band," the members are all Christian, exploring a wide variety of lyrical themes in their music.

Review:

There is no denying that Emery has a hit with this most recent album. You will immediately notice that the band have in an essence gone back to their roots with a solid list of heavy tracks. There is plenty of screaming mixed in with very solid soft vocals making for the perfect pitch. With Devin Shelton sidelined Toby Morrel truly stepped up to shoulder the bands vocal performance. Though they avoid the Christian stereotype, the lyrics truly suggest a struggle with man's every day fears. This shines through on the track “You Wanted It", which helps define the theme of the album We Do What We Want, and whether good or bad the only real person that can change your life is you. Emery also does a great job of balancing the tracks even without some of their more unique sounding tracks. Some may not enjoy the album based off of some of the more exotic album releases, but this is truly how Emery started out and it was a welcomed return to the genre.
